We were actually pretty close to releasing but ran into some issues that weren't especially important to my implementation but required considerable changes. We didn't want others to have to suffer through this transition, or (more selfishly) have to support them through it. I'll absolutely be posting more details and hopefully some intro tutorials once an initial release is ready. Thanks Jo. It's led to lots of wandering around the internet reading about REST and Geo-REST or whatever you want to call it, and now I have a project where I think it will be exactly the way to go. I can't wait until you release the extension into the wild!
